In the Mummy movies scarabs were portrayed as hungry man eating rodent sized insects that enjoyed burrowing into human flesh. This is very far from the truth, in reality, scarabs do not burrow into flesh, dung is their "flesh" of choice, and they definitely cannot run down humans. In fact, they are actually quite slow and clumsy and can have troubles getting up if they roll over on their backs.
It is the media, like the popular Mummy series, that give insects a bad name. Media goes out to try to make insects more interesting by making them scary, or enlarging them like in the Mummy. they use scarabs as a torture method in the movie and label them as something disgusting and foul. I think if the Pharaohs were to go see a movie in the theaters today they would be very disappointed in Brendan Fraser's depiction.
